Holbox Island is located in the northeastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, Yum Balam ecological reserve, in Mexico, and it is here where we find one of the best habitats for shad in the world.

Isla Holbox is small, has beautiful white sand beaches that border a jade green sea, and is almost unknown by tourists. The natural attractions make the island of Holbox fantastic, but come to this paradise above all to enjoy fly fishing for shad. In the shallows of the mangroves, you can find shad and snook all year-round. However, migratory fish are the reason why Holbox Island is a world-class destination for fly fishing.

In April, migrants begin feeding in the clear water of the lowlands, so the best time for fishing is during the months of June, July, and August. During the spring and summer, bonefish, barracuda, snapper, pomfret, and horse mackerel are also abundant. And when you are not fishing, you can enjoy a very comfortable stay in our rooms and suites at the Hotel Faro Viejo.

The rooms of the Hotel Faro Viejo overlook the sea and are located on the beach. The hotel also has a restaurant-bar where every meal is a feast of freshness and exquisite taste.

To start your fly fishing adventure, our experienced guides pick you up at the hotel’s private dock at 6 o’clock in the morning, and breakfast is served on the boat so that you have more time to enjoy fishing. The guides are fully trained professionals and natives of Isla Holbox who have been fishing shad with cane for a long time and have years of experience guiding and fishing in this area.

The fishing boats are seaworthy pangas of 18 feet. They are fully equipped, comfortable, safe, and at the same time are easy to maneuver in the lows using a lever. You board our boats at the pier of the Faro Viejo Hotel, and they take you fishing in the places that surround the Island. The fishing sites are between 20 minutes to an hour away from the hotel’s private dock and have a depth that varies between 1.5 and 3 meters.

Regularly, a fishing trip takes eight hours, but it is also possible to hire additional hours as extra time. At the end of the fishing trip, the boats take you back to the pier of the Faro Viejo Hotel.

It is easy to get to Isla Holbox. You fly to the Cancun airport, and our transportation awaits you there. After a short journey by road, you board the boat that takes you to the Faro Viejo Hotel on the Island. Guests who do not fish can enjoy admiring the large number of flamingos found around Holbox Island during the shad fishing season.

Enthusiasts praise the island and its birds. The place is not very good for snorkeling and diving; however, the beaches are splendid, and it is very easy to swim in the sea. Isla Holbox has a relaxed atmosphere. The few tourists that come here come to relax on an island that only has a small fishing village with sandy streets and friendly people.
